From 12:01 AM Pacific time on September 1, 2005 until 11:59 PM Pacific time on September 4th, 2005, Dotster, Inc., a leading domain registration and web hosting company, will give away free WHOIS privacy protection on every .COM and .NET domain registration.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires registrars to maintain a public database (dubbed "WHOIS") of all registered domains. This publicly accessible database displays the name, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the individual or organization who has registered the domain.
With Dotster's WHOIS privacy protection (called Privacy Post), that information is concealed. WHOIS searchers instead see Dotster's corporate information, including an anonymized e-mail address that filters for spam and viruses, allowing the domain owner to retrieve any vital correspondence sent to him or her.
The abuse of information in the WHOIS database is one reason that Dotster is providing a window for free Privacy Post registration services. George DeCarlo, vice president of marketing for Dotster, explains, "Privacy infringement is a concern to many people, and they may not know that it's possible to shield their identity. We're hoping this short give-away will draw attention to the privacy options that are available."
To activate the free Privacy Post service, customers should enter the code STOPSPAM during checkout. Dotster is featuring this code prominently on its website during the give-away.
With nearly three million Internet domains, Dotster, Inc. is one of the largest ICANN-accredited domain name registrars in the world. Launched in 2000, Dotster was among the first to offer long-term registrations and discounted pricing. Dotster delivers creative and hard-to-find domain names, superior online account management tools, and a dedicated support team. The company's services include web hosting, DNS management, website development and marketing services, and partner programs. http://www.dotster.com
