Online auction site eBay's ( ebay.com) Web site went down worldwide on Monday evening due to a power outage at one of its principal hosting facilities in the San Francisco area.
"A primary hosting provider for eBay in the San Francisco Bay Area experienced a power outage, and all site functions were temporarily down," eBay said in a statement on its Web site early on Tuesday. According to a report by Reuters, the outage occurred at a facility run by Qwest Communications (qwest.com), shutting down eBay's site for approximately 100 minutes. A spokesperson for eBay told Reuters that global access to virtually all of the site's functions was restored in three hours. The company said on its Web site that credits would be granted according to its outage policy. Reuters also reported that the site for eBay's PayPal (paypal.com) online payment service was down for nearly 30 minutes on Monday evening. The outage was reportedly the result of a hardware failure in its Denver-based data center.
