Domain registrar and Web hosting provider Network Solutions ( networksolutions.com) announced on Tuesday that it had introduced a new line of SSL certificates.
The SSL certificates will employ 128-bit encryption and support up to 256-bit encryption. They are compatible with 99 percent of Web browsers and include Web site assurance guarantees of up to $1 million. "Any company or individual whose Web site transmits confidential data via the Internet understands the importance of protecting that data through encryption," says Champ Mitchell, chairman and CEO of Network Solutions. “By using the powerful, reliable and affordable new SSL Certificates from Network Solutions, a recognized industry leader in comprehensive Web services, they are able to reassure their customers that every measure is being taken to safeguard transactions. Network Solutions is quickly becoming the best one-stop shopping source for the most dependable Web services and customer support in the industry." Network Solutions says it is selling organization-validated certificates, which verify the business credentials of a certificate applicant after a background and third-party reference check. According to research firm Netcraft, vendors such as GeoTrust (geotrust.com) and Go Daddy (godaddy.com) sell domain-validated certificates, which confirm that the certificate applicant controls the domain name being secured. The company will offer a suite of four SSL services. Secure Link SSL Basic, designed for sites conducting a low volume of transactions, will be priced at $129 per year. Secure Link SSL Pro, for sites with medium to high levels of transactions, is priced at $199 per year. Secure Link SSL Wildcard, for organizations needing multiple SSL Certificates from a single domain name, starts at $599 per year. And Site Confirm Seal, priced at $79 per year, enables Web site owners to demonstrate that their identity has been authenticated and that their site can be trusted. All four services are available at a reduced price with a three-year agreement. Network Solutions will compete head-to-head with its former parent company VeriSign (verisign.com), the largest SSL certificate vendor. It already controls a large potential market. According to Netcraft, Network Solutions manages 6.5 million domain names and recently expanded its Web hosting operations.
